Celebrating the release of the 25th edition of WALL Literary Journal, focusing on community and nature.
WALL Literary Journal at Saddleback College is set to release its 25th edition this fall, focusing on themes of embracing the present and nature. The issue showcases a diverse array of literary and artistic contributions, including personal narratives and poetry. A public reading and celebration will be held to honor this milestone, highlighting the journal’s commitment to fostering a vibrant community for aspiring writers and artists.
Saddleback, California – WALL Literary Journal, the student-run publication at Saddleback College, is set to release its 25th edition this fall, focusing on the themes of embracing the present and nature. This year’s edition, as noted by the Editor-in-Chief, exhibits an “oddly present voice,” contrasting with previous editions that emphasized progression and future growth.
Submissions for the journal encompass a range of literary and artistic expressions. The editorial team has taken a hands-on approach to catalog submissions, working to create a cohesive issue despite the diversity of contributions. Although they faced a minor setback when a spreadsheet with the names of poetry finalists was leaked, the team remains hopeful that it did not negatively affect important contributors.
This year’s edition promises to not only build on previous works but also offer readers a strong expansion in terms of art and personal narratives. Noteworthy pieces expected to be featured include narratives exploring grief related to religious practices and poems that capture the essence of roommate relationships. The role of poetry in the journal is significant, with dedicated poetry editors striving to enhance the publication’s quality.
Two prominent figures in the poetry segment are editors Zoejean Gardner and Jacob Hoffman. Gardner seeks to gain publishing experience through her role, viewing it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Hoffman, with a background in illustration and computer science, brings a unique perspective to the intersection of poetry and art.
Fiction editors Maxwell Javaheri and Sean Mclay emphasize the importance of representing local student voices in their selections. Javaheri expressed the emotional challenges faced when rejecting strong pieces due to space limitations, while Mclay found insights into his own writing through the submissions process. Lila Mukasa and Saul Schindler serve as personal narrative editors, valuing the collaborative experience that comes with curating personal stories from fellow students.
The editing process involves intensive feedback and discussions, where members are tasked with facing the difficult choice of whether to include personal narratives. Graphic designers Iris Kim and Zoe Mccuen focus on the visual aspects of the journal, equipping themselves with fundamental skills that will benefit their future careers through this hands-on internship.
Gina Shaffer, who has served as WALL’s faculty advisor for 13 years, has observed substantial improvements in the publication’s visual appeal and campus recognition since her arrival. She has established four core values that guide the journal’s operations: communication, connection, creativity, and community.
To celebrate the launch of the 25th edition, a public reading and celebration is scheduled for October 23 during Wordfest OC. This event aims to honor the journey of the journal, and Shaffer plans to reach out to former staff to celebrate this significant milestone of 25 years.
The 25th edition of WALL Literary Journal not only highlights the creativity and talent of Saddleback College students but also reflects on the broader themes of capturing the present and cherishing the natural world around us. As the publication continues to evolve, it maintains its commitment to fostering a vibrant community for aspiring writers and artists.
