This initiative stems from research showing that listening to their parents’ voices can significantly benefit the growth and development of NICU babies.

Studies indicate that exposure to parental voices plays a crucial role in enhancing cardiorespiratory strength and promoting growth in premature infants. Additionally, research from Stanford Medicine links voice exposure in the NICU environment to improved brain maturity in infants. According to findings published in the Journal of Neonatal Nursing, reading to NICU babies not only helps in bonding but also supports their cognitive and emotional development.

The launch of the Tiny Tales Library was inspired by a nurse, who observed a UK nurse reading to NICU patients and recognized the potential advantages such interactions could afford to families navigating the challenges of a NICU stay. The library’s purpose is to promote parental and staff engagement within the unit.

To establish the library, the NICU team solicited new book donations from the community and coworkers. They also partnered with a Barnes & Noble store in Long Beach to help stock the library with an assortment of children’s books. Since the library opened earlier this year, it has already made a significant emotional impact on both staff and families.

The Tiny Tales Library allows families to borrow books, with each family able to take home up to three new books without needing to return them. This initiative has proven beneficial, as NICU mother Betsy Herrera has found reading to her son, born at 32 weeks, has positively affected his development while simultaneously strengthening their mother-son bond. She chose to read “Love You Forever,” which resonated with her desire to express her unconditional love to him.

Responses from the NICU’s families have been overwhelmingly positive, reflecting the emotional weight of this program in their daily experiences. The implementation of the Tiny Tales Library has been well received, with many families expressing gratitude for the opportunity to engage with their infants through storytelling.

In addition to the Tiny Tales Library, the NICU is participating in the Babies with Books Read-a-thon, set to occur from September 8 to September 18. The event aims to further promote the importance of reading to infants and encourages community involvement to support the families in the NICU.
