Sierra Canyon Dominates Orange Lutheran in High School Showdown

Sierra Canyon dominated Orange Lutheran 41-9 in a high school football showdown on Friday night, improving their record to 5-0. The Trailblazers have now recorded three wins in just a 13-day stretch, showcasing their impressive skill and coordination on the field. In contrast, Orange Lutheran fell to 3-2 following the loss.

The matchup highlighted Sierra Canyon’s formidable defense, known as the “Kaboom Squad.” The defensive unit was relentless, recording 10 tackles for loss and six sacks against Orange Lutheran. Defensive back Madden Riordan secured the victory for Sierra Canyon with a critical interception late in the game. Notably, senior defensive lineman Mikhal Johnson contributed significantly, tallying two sacks. Additionally, junior defensive tackle Kasi Currie made impactful plays, notching two tackles for loss and an interception within just four plays.

Throughout the game, Sierra Canyon effectively restrained Orange Lutheran’s offense. The Lancers managed to complete only five passes out of 17 attempts, while their rushing attack gained a mere nine yards and only two first downs during the first half. In comparison, Sierra Canyon amassed a total of 377 yards, with quarterback Laird Finkel throwing for 276 yards and two touchdown passes.

Sierra Canyon’s scoring prowess was evident as they netted 27 points in the first half, comfortably outpacing their opponents. A standout moment in the game was a trick play that led to an 8-yard touchdown reception by tight end Brayden Tautolo. Furthermore, LSU commit Havon Finney Jr. electrified the crowd with a 62-yard punt return for a touchdown. The Trailblazers also showcased their special teams when they blocked an Orange Lutheran field goal attempt, allowing Matthew Zapien to return the ball for a 71-yard touchdown.

Junior running back Jaxsen Stokes shone brightly, accounting for three touchdowns during the match — a 16-yard run followed by two 1-yard runs. The efficiency of Sierra Canyon’s offense coupled with the prowess of their defense led to an overwhelming victory.

Coach Rod Sherman of Orange Lutheran remarked on Sierra Canyon’s superior talent and speed, indicating that they are likely favorites for the CIF-SS Division 1 title this season. The Trailblazers’ defense featured nine returning starters who had only allowed seven points across their first four games, further illustrating their strength and depth.

Looking ahead, Orange Lutheran will take a much-needed bye week before preparing to face Mater Dei on October 3. Similarly, Sierra Canyon will also enjoy a bye week before they host Serra for their Mission League opener on the same date.
