Tustin, California – Saddleback College Expands Programs with New Facilities
Saddleback College has unveiled two new state-of-the-art buildings at its satellite campus in Tustin, aimed at enhancing educational offerings in advanced transportation and culinary arts. This facility expansion, which opened in the fall, covers 50,000 square feet and was constructed at a cost of $63 million. Together, these new buildings can accommodate up to 1,800 students.
The expansion signifies a pivotal moment for Saddleback College, marking the first time the institution will provide formal credit offerings off-site beyond adult education. This initiative aligns with the South Orange County Community College District’s vision for the Advanced Technology Education Park (ATEP), located on a former military base. The ATEP complex spans 61.4 acres and also houses the Irvine Valley College’s School of Integrated Design, Engineering, and Automation.
Advanced Transportation Facilities
The automotive technology facility has been designed to emulate a premium automotive dealership, featuring a lobby that mirrors a showroom. It encompasses a 30,000-square-foot space that includes four classrooms, conference areas, and a fully equipped automotive shop with 14 lift bays. A notable aspect of the facility is a 15,000-square-foot yard that accommodates up to 36 vehicles donated for instructional use.
The curriculum focuses on training students in non-fossil-fueled and autonomous vehicles. Students will learn about emerging technologies, earning certificates in areas such as electric vehicles and alternative fuel technology. One innovative area within the facility is the “black room,” where students gain hands-on experience calibrating LiDAR sensors for autonomous vehicles. The program ensures comprehensive training by covering both contemporary and traditional automotive equipment, thereby equipping students with a well-rounded skill set.
Saddleback College has established partnerships with leading industry players including Rivian Automotive Inc., Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi, and Subaru. These collaborations facilitate internships and job placements, further enhancing students’ career opportunities.
Culinary Arts Program Expansion
Concurrently, the culinary program has transitioned into a new 20,000-square-foot facility featuring four commercial kitchen labs and a student-run restaurant designed to seat 70 guests. This new culinary space is incorporated with advanced technology, including cameras and TV monitors designed to enhance the educational experience. The kitchens are exclusively electric to support sustainability objectives.
The culinary arts program now provides nine distinct pathways for degrees, certificates, and noncredit options. It has additionally introduced two new semester-long programs aimed at preparing students for entry-level jobs in the culinary field. As of October, the culinary program has seen a significant enrollment increase, with 641 students, representing a 54.8% rise.
Overall Enrollment Growth
Enrollment in the automotive technology program also demonstrated an upward trend, with 558 students enrolled, reflecting a 16% increase. Overall, Saddleback College’s total enrollment currently stands at 24,555 students, with projections suggesting that these numbers could double within the next three to five years.
Another building designated for computer science and mathematics, currently under construction, is expected to open in January. It will include specialized learning areas such as a cybersecurity lab.
The surge in enrollment has been attributed to effective marketing strategies specifically aimed at Hispanic and returning students, along with the affordability of tuition and the offering of zero textbook fee classes. Moreover, the recently completed Gateway building serves as the primary student services center, streamlining access to admissions, financial aid, and counseling services.
As Saddleback College continues to expand its educational offerings, the commitment to equipping students with skills relevant to the future workplace remains a top priority. The newly constructed facilities represent a significant investment in the future of education in Tustin and the surrounding areas.
