Mission Viejo, California — Robert (Bob) Potter, a prominent figure in the retail pharmacy industry and longtime Vice President of Operations for Southern California’s Osco/Save-On Drugs, passed away at the age of 79 after a courageous battle with cancer. His death marks the end of an era for both his family and the retail community in which he played a vital role.

Bob Potter was born on March 6, 1946, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Thelma and Arthur Potter. He spent his childhood in Dubuque and was a proud graduate of Wahlert High School, Class of 1964. Shortly after high school, he married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Heitz, on November 30, 1968, beginning a partnership that would last over five decades.

In 1966, Potter joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served in locations including Korea and the Philippines until his discharge in 1971. After completing his military service, he relocated to Iowa City with Joyce to pursue further education at the University of Iowa, earning a bachelor’s degree in business in 1972.

Following his graduation, Potter launched his career with Osco Drug, laying the groundwork for what would become a successful executive trajectory. He later moved to Marlborough, Massachusetts, where he raised three children: Jeff, Stephanie, and Kristen, instilling in them values of hard work and integrity.

In 1991, he relocated to California to take on a new position with Osco/Save-On Drugs, eventually rising to the role of Vice President of Operations for Southern California. Under his leadership, the company experienced significant growth and remained a staple in the community until his retirement in 2006. After stepping back from his professional life, Potter engaged in various leisure activities, including golfing and reading the newspaper from cover to cover, as well as traveling with Joyce and friends.

The joy of his life, however, came from spending time with family, especially during vacations and memorable trips. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, children Jeff (Christine), Stephanie, and Kristen (Ben), along with several grandchildren: Drew, Danny, Brian, Jake, and Sophie. His joy was also accompanied by his siblings, including Gary (Ann), Joyce, Carol (Jim) Voelker, and Ralph (Ann) Potter. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Duane, who passed away the previous October; Bob had expressed his longing to reunite with him in heaven.

Throughout his life, Potter was recognized for his integrity, positive attitude, and a sense of humor that made him beloved by colleagues and family alike. His iconic full head of hair became a trademark, enhancing his distinctive presence in the community.

A Mass of Christian Burial has been scheduled for September 11, 2025, at St. Kilian Church in Mission Viejo, California. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Veteran Emergency Assistance Fund in Newport Beach, CA, honoring both Potter’s service to his country and the values he upheld throughout his life.

The arrangements were managed by Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home & Crematory based in Dubuque, Iowa.
