Capistrano Unified School District has started construction on Rienda School, a new TK-8 facility set to open in the fall of 2027. Situated on a 15-acre campus, the school will focus on STEAM education, accommodating up to 1,600 students. The project, which includes advanced learning environments and a joint-use park, aims to address the growing educational needs of the Rienda community as it transitions into a larger housing development.

Rancho Mission Viejo, CA – The Capistrano Unified School District has announced the beginning of construction for Rienda School, a new TK-8 educational facility set to open in the fall of 2027. Located within the upcoming community of Rienda, the school is planned to accommodate up to 1,600 students.

The 15-acre campus will emphasize STEAM education, focusing on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Its design includes an innovation center that features a robotics lab and advanced wireless technology aimed at enhancing the learning experience. In addition to the innovation center, the school will provide performing arts spaces, outdoor learning areas, and varied classroom environments.

Rienda School marks the second educational institution constructed by Capistrano Unified in the Rancho Mission Viejo area, following the establishment of Esencia School in 2018. The school’s strategic location is set between Coyotes and Pablo Way and will serve as a feeder school for Tesoro High School, similar to the mission of Esencia School.

Enrollment Growth and Community Development

The decision to build Rienda School comes as the Capistrano Unified School District faces increasing enrollment in the Rienda area. To accommodate this surge, the district has added 400 temporary seats at Esencia TK-8 to meet the growing demand for educational spaces.

The Rienda project was given the green light during a board meeting held on February 19, 2020. Construction work is currently underway, with underground efforts already making progress. The budget allocated for this school construction is $78.5 million, funded through a combination of developer fees and state matching funds.

Modern Facilities and Features

The design of Rienda School will include flexible classrooms outfitted with movable furniture to cater to various teaching methodologies and learning preferences. Additionally, the school will feature modern teaching walls and interactive displays aimed at enhancing engagement among students.

Adjacent to the Rienda School, a planned joint-use park is set to cover 6 acres, featuring youth athletic fields, picnic areas, and walking trails, further enhancing the community’s recreational offerings.

Context of Community Growth

The establishment of Rienda School is part of a larger development initiative in Rancho Mission Viejo, an area projected to host up to 14,000 homes. This development is situated on a previously utilized cattle ranch, with homes expected to hit the market beginning in spring 2022. As the community continues to evolve, local leaders highlight the importance of providing quality educational opportunities to sustain growth and support family needs in the area.

Capistrano Unified School District, the largest school district in Orange County, currently serves over 47,000 students across 63 campuses. With the construction of Rienda School, the district aims to enhance educational access and foster an environment conducive to learning in response to the burgeoning population in Rancho Mission Viejo.
