Mission Viejo, California – Russell Steven Williams, a beloved local educator and martial arts master, passed away at the age of 78 on March 11, 2025, at Hoag Hospital in Irvine. With a profound impact on both his community and family, Williams leaves behind a legacy of dedication and service.

Williams, affectionately known as “Mister” by his wife Judy, was a devoted family man, surviving by his three children: Damon, Chalice, and Thaddeus. He was also a cherished grandfather, known as “Poppy/Grampa” to ten grandchildren. His brother Claudio referred to him as “Big Brotha,” highlighting the close bond they shared.

Professionally, Williams was a well-respected educator at Mission Viejo High School, where he taught Journalism, English, and Photography. His influence extended beyond the classroom; he also coached basketball teams at the school and engaged with community youth through baseball and soccer coaching. His students and athletes drew inspiration from his commitment and passion for education and sports.

In addition to his work as an educator, Williams was a highly skilled martial artist. He held the title of 8th-degree Master, also referred to as “Sifu,” in Kung Fu San Soo and owned Kung Fu San Soo of Saddleback Valley for over 40 years. His dedication to martial arts not only shaped his own life but also positively impacted the lives of countless students who trained under his guidance.

Williams was also known for his scholarly pursuits, particularly in the realm of Comparative Religion. He conducted numerous Bible studies and lectures, sharing his knowledge and insights in various venues. A quote from Psalm 23:6 held special significance for him, reflecting his deep faith: “Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

A Celebration of Life event has been organized to honor Williams’ memory, set to take place on June 29, 2025, at 3 p.m. The event will be held at Mission Hills Church, located at 24162 Alicia Parkway, Mission Viejo. Friends, family, and community members are invited to attend and pay their respects. For any inquiries regarding the Celebration of Life, the contact number is 949-278-0137.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to several charitable organizations including the Special Olympics, St. Jude’s Hospital for Children, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, or any charity of choice.
