Teams participated in various local tournaments, emphasizing player development as the football season approaches. Coach Chad Johnson praised the team’s resilience and adaptability as they maintained an undefeated record, showcasing their depth and skill despite missing key players. Looking forward, Mission Viejo is set to face Santa Margarita in their football season opener.
Mission Viejo hosted an exciting seven-on-seven passing tournament on Saturday, showcasing young football talent and allowing fans to gain a glimpse into the upcoming high school football season. The event attracted several top teams, although some changes in participation occurred leading up to the tournament.
Among the participating teams, Mater Dei made an appearance but will enter a mandatory two-week dead period following this tournament. Quarterback Luke Fahey of Mission Viejo was anticipated to go head-to-head against Mater Dei’s robust defensive backs, providing fans with thrilling matchups throughout the event. However, Santa Margarita unexpectedly withdrew from the Mission Viejo tournament and was replaced by Schurr, a team that recently celebrated victory in another tournament.
Additionally, another eight-team passing tournament was held at St. John Bosco, featuring competitive teams like Servite and Gardena Serra. Other local tournaments this weekend included events organized by Simi Valley, Redondo Union, and Baldwin Park. The robust schedule of tournaments reflects a dynamic offseason for high school football teams, emphasizing the importance of these competitions for player development and team cohesion.
Moving forward, a notable tournament is slated for July 12, with the Huntington Beach Edison’s Battle at the Beach among the highlighted events. Mission Viejo, under the leadership of quarterback Luke Fahey, previously triumphed at this competition, capturing victory despite the absence of five key players. Fahey delivered an impressive performance in the championship round, throwing three touchdown passes and leading Mission Viejo to a 23-6 victory over Mission Hills of San Marcos. This strengthens their reputation and showcases their depth.
Coach Chad Johnson acknowledged the team’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure, as Mission Viejo secured the tournament title for the second consecutive year. Over the past three months, they have achieved remarkable success, winning three tournaments and completing a “Triple Crown” of passing tournaments. Fahey’s contributions were significant, connecting with receivers Luke Karby and Davonte Curtis for crucial touchdowns during the tournament.
Throughout these passing tournaments, Mission Viejo maintained an undefeated record of 21-0, reflecting both talent and strategic execution. However, several key players, including wide receiver Vance Spafford and cornerback Jeron Jones, were unavailable during this particular event. The team adapted by modifying their secondary, utilizing players such as Myles Lassiter, Colin Burke, and Jordan Hicks as cornerbacks, along with a new safety lineup. This adaptability highlights the team’s size and skill, allowing them to maneuver around missing athletes effectively.
In other tournament highlights, Brady Annett, the quarterback for Corona del Mar, also demonstrated impressive skills, guiding his team to the semifinals. Meanwhile, the Ocean View tournament featured San Juan Hills defeating Downey 28-14, marking their second title of the offseason. These passing tournaments hold critical importance as they provide teams with an opportunity to evaluate player performance and progress ahead of the football season.
Looking ahead, Mission Viejo is set to kick off their football season against Santa Margarita on August 22, following a period of strategic preparation and assessment from the recent tournaments.
