Mission Viejo – Mission Viejo’s football team triumphed at the Battle at the Beach tournament, securing the title with a convincing 23-6 victory over Mission Hills of San Marcos in the championship game. This win marks a significant achievement for the Diablos, particularly as they played without five key players due to various injuries and illnesses.
Quarterback Luke Fahey was instrumental in the championship match, throwing three touchdown passes that propelled his team to victory. Despite the absence of players such as Vance Spafford (sick), Jeron Jones (fractured wrist), Sawyer Thomson (knee injury), Zachary Foeldi (knee injury), and Max Markofski (hip injury), the team’s depth and resilience shone through.
Fahey’s performance included touchdown passes to Luke Karby, running back Davonte Curtis, and junior running back Dallas Miller. The team’s defense also made a mark, with Jordan Hicks recording an interception during the title game. The Diablos finished the tournament with an impressive 21-0 record, remaining undefeated throughout their matches.
The victory at the Battle at the Beach not only highlights Mission Viejo’s current form but also cements their historic success in this tournament, marking their second consecutive win. Additionally, the team has achieved a prestigious “Triple Crown” in the past three months, with wins in the Millikan and South County tournaments.
In their semifinal matchup, Mission Viejo faced a tight contest against Cathedral of Los Angeles, narrowly winning 26-25 after a late touchdown from Fahey to Curtis. Notably, Corona del Mar made an unexpected run to the semifinals, finishing second in their group behind Mission Viejo with a 3-1 record. The triumph underlines the strength of Mission Viejo’s program, which emphasizes talent development starting in seventh and eighth grades.
Looking forward, Mission Viejo is set to open its regular season against Santa Margarita on August 22. The anticipation is high for Fahey, who has already committed to play football at Ohio State, solidifying his future in collegiate sports.
The Diablos have also adjusted their defensive strategy with a revamped secondary that includes players Myles Lassiter, Colin Burke, and Hicks at cornerback, as well as Ryder Brown, Aidan Smith, and JoJo Reed at safety, demonstrating the team’s continuous efforts to enhance their defensive capabilities.
Mission Viejo’s success at the Battle at the Beach is a testament to their preparation, teamwork, and the ability to overcome adversity, positioning them as a formidable presence as they head into the new season.
