News Summary

Mission Viejo is set to become home to its first standalone Costco gas station, featuring 40 gas pumps and exclusively for Costco members. With plans approved and construction beginning in 2025, the station aims to alleviate traffic at nearby existing warehouses and provide affordable fuel. This facility will replace a former retail space and enhance Costco’s offerings in the area, reflecting the company’s strategy to boost member value and convenience.

Mission Viejo, California will soon welcome its first standalone Costco gas station, set to open in the spring of 2026. This new gas station will feature 40 gas pumps, making it the largest Costco gas station to date. The anticipated construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2025.

Unlike traditional gas stations, this facility will not include any retail space or a convenience store. It will be exclusively accessible to Costco members, enhancing the value of membership through the provision of cost-effective fuel options. Notably, this gas station will be located approximately two miles from an existing Costco warehouse, which has a conventional gas station.

The development site will take over a shopping center location, necessitating the demolition of a former Bed, Bath & Beyond store. Plans for this project were given the green light by Mission Viejo’s Planning and Transportation Commission in March of 2025.

Costco aims to ease heavy traffic congestion at its existing warehouse locations with this standalone gas station. The concept aligns with the company’s long-term strategy to enhance membership value by offering lower fuel prices and a 5% rewards program for credit cardholders. This approach is part of a broader initiative to attract more shoppers to its warehouses, as gas sales have historically been a major driver of store traffic, despite the fact that profit margins are lower than on other products.

In recent developments, Costco has also extended gas station operating hours across North America. The new hours, which include operations from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday, and from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sundays, aim to make refueling “more convenient” for members.

Costco anticipates that thousands of drivers will take advantage of the new gas station, as it seeks to capitalize on the sustained demand for affordable fuel in a competitive market. In fact, gas sales represented nearly one in eight dollars of the company’s total earnings last year, contributing approximately $30 billion to its revenue.

The popularity of Costco’s gas stations is attributed to their significantly lower prices compared to competitors, making them a favored choice among members. Following the Mission Viejo gas station’s launch, analysts speculate that Costco may consider rolling out standalone gas stations in other locations, leveraging the experience gained from this new endeavor.

Presently, multiple Costco gas stations are in various stages of development across North America, indicative of the company’s commitment to enhancing its fuel offerings. This strategic expansion reflects the growing trend of retailers seeking to provide added services that cater to their customer base’s needs, especially in areas where fuel prices are a primary concern.

As Costco continues to innovate and expand its operations, the introduction of the standalone gas station in Mission Viejo is poised to significantly impact both its business model and customer satisfaction levels, while promising to meet the increasing demand for affordable fuelling options.
