Families engaging with pets during the Adopt-a-Pet Day at Mission Viejo.

News Summary

Mission Viejo Animal Services is organizing an Adopt-a-Pet Day, encouraging families to adopt pets rather than buy them. The event will feature waived adoption fees for approved applicants and aims to raise awareness about homeless animals in California. The recent rescue of abandoned puppies highlights the need for responsible pet ownership and the importance of adopting from shelters. Participation in Adopt-a-Pet Day can help reduce animal overpopulation and support local animal welfare initiatives.

Mission Viejo Animal Services to Host Adopt-a-Pet Day

Mission Viejo Animal Services (MVAS) will host a special Adopt-a-Pet Day on Saturday, June 7, with the goal of promoting pet adoption and raising awareness about the thousands of homeless animals seeking shelter in California. The event aims to educate families about the importance of adopting pets instead of buying them to mitigate irresponsible breeding practices.

Taking place at the MVAS center, located at 28095 Hillcrest, every approved applicant will enjoy waived adoption fees during this event. This initiative emphasizes the center’s commitment to pairing each animal with a loving and suitable owner.

Recent Rescue Highlights Need for Adoption

The importance of pet adoption is underscored by MVAS’s recent rescue of ten puppies, who were abandoned near the animal shelter on July 24. This alarming event occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. when the puppies, just three weeks old, were thrown from a moving vehicle and left in bushes. Fortunately, a volunteer dog walker discovered them in a vinyl pool hours later.

These puppies faced significant danger during their abandonment in a perilous area known as “coyote country.” Thanks to the swift response from MVAS staff, the puppies were nursed back to health and placed with experienced foster caregivers. All ten puppies, now fully recovered, will soon be available for adoption.

Legal Action and Responsible Pet Ownership

MVAS’s efforts to address animal cruelty have led to a comprehensive investigation into the incident involving the abandoned puppies. Surveillance footage was reviewed, capturing images of the suspect who discarded the animals, which has resulted in police interviews. MVAS plans to file animal cruelty charges against the individual involved with the Orange County District Attorney’s office.

Moreover, the abandoned puppies’ mother, named Holly, has been located and seized, allowing for a heartwarming reunion with her puppies. This incident illustrates the critical need for responsible pet ownership and the importance of relinquishing pets to shelters rather than abandoning them.

The Bigger Picture: Animal Welfare in California

In California, thousands of animals enter shelters annually, each hoping to find loving families. The Adopt-a-Pet Day aims to counteract this issue by encouraging communities to consider adoption as a first option, ultimately reducing the cycle of overpopulation in shelters and the need for charitable organizations.

Many pets in shelters, including dogs and cats, are in need of homes and loving families. By showing support for events like Adopt-a-Pet Day, communities can contribute to the solution and help spread the message about responsible pet ownership.

How to Get Involved

Families interested in adopting a pet can visit the MVAS center on June 7 to meet the animals available for adoption and learn more about the benefits of bringing a furry friend into their lives. For additional information regarding the event or on how to help, individuals can contact MVAS at 949-470-3045.

This initiative serves as a reminder that every pet deserves a safe and loving home. By adopting, individuals are not only helping an animal in need but also enriching their lives with companionship and joy.
