A memorial service and celebration of her life are planned in the coming months.
Mary Ann Calannio, a cherished resident of Mission Viejo, California, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on May 18, 1934, in Jamestown, New York, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ditonto Destro and had a younger sister, Cynthia. Calannio was known for her warmth, humor, and generous spirit, leaving behind a legacy of love and memorable family gatherings.
Calannio is survived by her three children, who include Thomas Calannio and his wife Linda and their son Landon, all of Salinas, California. Cathy Marion, another daughter, resides in Houston, Texas, with her husband, Jesse, while her youngest son, Jeffrey Calannio, lives in Laguna Niguel, California, with his wife Kara and their daughter Sienna.
Mary Ann’s journey took her to California in 1987. Throughout her career, she worked in retail before dedicating time at CHOC Hospital. She was regarded as a strong and independent woman, demonstrating resilience well into her later years. Calannio was a devoted mother who cherished family life and was well-known for her legendary Italian meals, especially homemade pasta and meatballs.
Family gatherings were a hallmark of Calannio’s life. She took pride in her Italian heritage and delighted in sharing traditions with her loved ones, especially during the holiday season. Christmas was particularly special to her, and she enjoyed welcoming family for joyful visits, where she would share stories about what she referred to as the “good old days.”
Calannio had a passion for several activities, including playing blackjack, showcasing her spirited nature throughout her life. She admired the color turquoise, which became one of her signature styles. Her deep faith guided her life, reflecting a commitment to kindness and encouraging those around her. Those who knew her described her as beautiful inside and out, a portrayal of her inner grace and charm.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Calannio, her parents, Joseph and Mary Ditonto Destro, and her sister, Cynthia Underwood. A memorial service is scheduled for June 6, 2025, at O’Connor’s Mortuary in Laguna Hills, California. Furthermore, a celebration of life will be held on August 2, 2025, at Chautauqua Suites in Mayville, New York, beginning at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association in her memory.
The passing of Mary Ann Calannio marks the end of an era, as she touched numerous lives with her kindness and unwavering strength. Her family and friends remember her fondly, especially for her ability to bring people together and create an environment filled with love and laughter.
