Dana Point is introducing a Free Summer Trolley service that will operate daily from May 23 until Labor Day. This eco-friendly transportation option aims to connect residents and visitors to coastal cities while reducing traffic congestion. The trolley will feature expanded service hours, new stops, and real-time tracking through an app, enhancing commuter experience and promoting community interaction.
The city of Dana Point will launch its Free Summer Trolley service starting Friday, May 23, 2025, running daily until Labor Day on Monday, September 1, 2025. This initiative aims to provide an eco-friendly transportation option for residents and visitors to connect to the coastal cities, foster community engagement, and alleviate traffic congestion.
The trolley will operate on a varied schedule—Monday to Thursday from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Friday from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Saturday from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. For holidays, including Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day, the service will run from 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM. All trolleys are free of charge, handicap accessible, and will run approximately every 15 minutes, ensuring convenience for passengers.
In response to community feedback, several new trolley stops have been added for the Summer 2025 service. These stops include Stop S17 at Calle Naranja and Calle Juanita (Sunset Park), Stop S18 at Camino de Estrella and Calle Naranja, Stop S19 at Camino de Estrella and Mira Costa (providing a connection point with San Clemente), and Stop S20 at Camino Capistrano and Calle Loma (Pines Park).
The Dana Point Trolley also functions as a regional hub, allowing seamless connections to other cities’ trolley services. Passengers can connect with Laguna Beach’s Free Coastal Trolley at Salt Creek Beach/Ritz Carlton, as well as Laguna Beach’s Summer Breeze, which operates from Thursday to Sunday. Additionally, service from the Laguna Niguel Summer Weekend Trolley and the San Juan Capistrano Free Weekend Trolley is available, enhancing the overall mobility of residents and tourists. The San Clemente Daily Summer Trolley also connects at Stop S23: Camino de Estrella and Mira Costa.
The Dana Point Trolley App will be available for passengers to download, providing real-time tracking and information on trolley schedules. This application will help passengers plan their trips efficiently, enhancing their overall experience while utilizing the service.
This initiative is primarily funded by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and aims to maintain ridership counts necessary to retain grant funding for trolley costs. Last summer, the Dana Point trolley service recorded over 80,000 riders, contributing to a total of 400,000 boardings on all summer trolley routes across the region. Local officials have underscored the importance of this service in promoting sustainable transport, highlighting its impact on reducing traffic and enhancing the quality of life for those in the area.
The trolley service is not only a means of transportation but also fosters interactions among riders, creating a sense of community and shared experience. Passengers use the trolleys for various leisure activities, including dining, shopping, and beach trips, further integrating the service into the community fabric of Dana Point and surrounding areas.
As the summer approaches, the Free Summer Trolley is set to play a vital role in connecting city residents and visitors alike, promoting environmental sustainability, and successfully navigating the potential traffic challenges typically encountered during peak tourist seasons.
