Colorful Dana Point summer trolley with passengers enjoying their ride

News Summary

Dana Point is introducing its Free Summer Trolley service starting May 23, 2025, offering residents and visitors a complimentary and accessible transportation option. The trolley will operate daily until Labor Day, with varied hours throughout the week. New stops will enhance accessibility, connecting to other regional trolley services. This initiative aims to improve community engagement, reduce traffic congestion, and provide a sustainable travel alternative during the busy summer months.

Dana Point is set to launch its popular Free Summer Trolley service starting Friday, May 23, 2025. This seasonal service will operate daily until Labor Day, which falls on Monday, September 1, 2025, providing residents and visitors a convenient way to navigate the city.

The trolley will run on specific operating hours throughout the week: from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM Monday to Thursday, and extending to 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Fridays. The weekend schedule will see trolleys operating from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Saturdays and 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Sundays. On holidays such as Labor Day, the service will be available from 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM.

One of the standout features of the Dana Point trolley service is that it is completely free for riders. The trolleys are also designed to be handicap accessible and will arrive at approximately 15-minute intervals. This service connects various regional hubs, facilitating travel between South Orange County coastal cities.

For the Summer 2025 season, new trolley stops will be introduced to enhance accessibility for residents and tourists. Additional stops include:

  • Stop S17: Calle Naranja and Calle Juanita (Sunset Park)
  • Stop S18: Camino de Estrella and Calle Naranja
  • Stop S19: Camino de Estrella and Mira Costa (connects with San Clemente)
  • Stop S20: Camino Capistrano and Calle Loma (Pines Park)

In addition to serving new locations, the Dana Point Trolley links up with other regional trolley services. These include the Laguna Beach Free Coastal Trolley at Salt Creek Beach/Ritz Carlton, the Laguna Niguel Summer Weekend Trolley running Thursdays through Sundays, the San Juan Capistrano Free Weekend Summer Trolley operating every 20 minutes on weekends, and the San Clemente Daily Summer Trolley, which connects at Camino de Estrella and Mira Costa.

To improve user experience, a new Dana Point Trolley app will be available for download, allowing riders to track trolley schedules and services in real-time.

It is essential for the city to maintain strong ridership numbers to secure grant funding that supports the costs of the trolley service. In the previous summer season, the trolleys recorded over 80,000 riders in Dana Point alone. This passenger volume has helped to reduce traffic congestion and improve community connection among locals and tourists accessing popular attractions such as beaches, shopping areas, and dining venues.

Riders often enjoy the trolley’s social atmosphere, which encourages conversations among passengers. Each trolley is equipped with bike racks, further enhancing accessibility for recreational activities, such as surfing.

This service is part of a broader transportation strategy aimed at effectively managing visitor influx and supporting environmental commitments among coastal cities. By improving public transportation options, Dana Point hopes to provide a sustainable alternative to driving, thus reducing reliance on personal vehicles.

The anticipation surrounding the Dana Point Free Summer Trolley service reflects the city’s commitment to enhancing mobility options while fostering community engagement throughout the busy summer months.
