Costco has revealed plans to build its first stand-alone gas station in Mission Viejo, California, with construction set to begin in the fall of 2025 and an anticipated opening in spring 2026. Sixty years after Costco’s inception, gasoline sales became a significant revenue stream, accounting for nearly one in eight dollars made by the company last year, totaling approximately $30 billion. Costco’s approach to fuel sales is focused on maintaining competitive prices, alongside a 5% reward for credit cardholders on gas purchases, further emphasizing its commitment to providing value to members.
The Mission Viejo Planning and Transportation Commission approved the plans for the new gas station project in March. The construction site involves the demolition of a former Bed Bath & Beyond store, marking a transition in usage from retail to fuel services.
