The much-anticipated Battle at the Beach football tournament is set to return to Edison this Saturday, featuring a lineup of prominent high school teams and showcasing young talents ready to make their mark. The tournament will kick off at 9 a.m. with multiple pools of competing teams, setting the stage for thrilling football action throughout the day.
Among the teams participating is Santa Margarita, making its debut in this tournament under the leadership of new head coach Carson Palmer. The team had previously withdrawn from the South County Classic due to player availability issues, leading to heightened expectations as they prepare for their first match against Edison in Pool A. A key player to watch for Santa Margarita will be Trace Johnson, a quarterback who recently transferred from Florida and is committed to Tulane.
Defending champions Edison, who won the CIF State Division 1A title last season, will aim to showcase their prowess despite losing standout players Jacob Martin and Jake Minter to graduation. Returning quarterback Sam Thomson will need to identify new playmakers to aid in their quest to repeat as champions, with Ayden Degiacomo emerging as a primary target after an impressive 31 receptions for nearly 600 yards in the previous season. Coach Jeff Grady also highlighted Teo Hampton as another potential standout for Edison.
The competition intensifies with Los Alamitos, where first-year starting quarterback Colin Creason has garnered attention for his skills. Coach Ray Fenton has called him “the best-kept secret in Southern California,” suggesting that he possesses the potential to make a significant impact. Creason will be supported by several capable targets, including a tight end committed to Boise State and a running back committed to Army.
Another team to watch is JSerra, which will feature Koa Smith-Mayall stepping into the quarterback role following a knee injury that sidelined him last summer. With a talented receiving corps, which includes a wide receiver committed to Columbia, Smith-Mayall will look to establish himself and contribute to his team’s success.
Servite will be aiming to improve its standing after a disappointing performance in the Brave 8, where they finished with a 1-2 record. The team, currently blending quarterback Kale Murphy with a new receiving group that features standout sprinter Benjamin Harris, will strive for a better outcome this weekend.
Mission Viejo will seek to complete a “Triple Crown” by adding the Battle at the Beach title to their earlier victories in previous tournaments. This objective adds an extra layer of motivation for the team as they face off against formidable competition.
Finally, St. John Bosco, known for its depth and talent pool, plans to rotate its players strategically to find winning combinations. They are set to open their tournament against Cathedral of Los Angeles, aiming to establish their dominance early on.
As the tournament prepares to commence, anticipation is building for what promises to be an exciting day full of competitive spirit, emerging talent, and the opportunity for teams to showcase their skills on a prominent platform.
