Orange County Football Preview: 2025 Alpha League Season

Orange County, CA – The 2025 Alpha League football season is set to commence with four competitive teams: Edison, Los Alamitos, Mission Viejo, and San Clemente. Each team brings its unique strengths and top players, promising an exciting season ahead for high school football fans.

Edison Chargers

The Edison Chargers are looking to continue their successful run with a dynamic roster. Key players include senior Devyn Blake, an All-Orange County third team member noted for his skill on both the offensive and defensive lines, and junior quarterback Sam Thomson, who took the helm late last season and was instrumental in leading the team to CIF championships. Edison plans to enhance its passing game in 2025, looking to capitalize on the abilities of junior wide receiver Ayden DeGiacomo, who had 31 receptions for 597 yards last season.

In addition to Blake and Thomson, senior Will Harrison contributed significantly to the team’s defense as the fifth-leading tackler last year, earning All-League second team honors. With a strong lineup, expectations are high for Edison to contend aggressively within the Alpha League.

Los Alamitos Griffins

The Los Alamitos Griffins are another strong contender, spearheaded by senior running back Lenny Ibarra, an All-Alpha League first team selection and Army commit, ranked fourth among Orange County running backs. New starting quarterback Colin Creason is expected to make a notable impact this season, complemented by tight end Beckham Hofland, who is committed to Boise State.

With standout players such as defensive lineman Jackson Ranger, known as “Rambo” and 2024’s Alpha League Lineman of the Year, and promising newcomer Kamden Tillis, previously a running back with offers from Hawaii and San Diego State, the Griffins are prepared to showcase a formidable offense and defense throughout the season.

Mission Viejo Diablos

Mission Viejo emerges as a favorite with an ambitious outlook for the Alpha League. The team aims for a strong 3-0 record in league play after a rigorous non-league schedule featuring tough opponents like Santa Margarita. Senior quarterback Luke Fahey is a notable asset, recognized as the top quarterback in Orange County and committed to Ohio State.

As a key player, senior wide receiver Vance Spafford, who has committed to Miami, is also expected to excel after being selected as a two-time All-County first-team member. Defensive tackle JD Hill, who recorded 16.5 sacks last year and received All-County second team honors, along with senior defensive back Jeron Jones, a Washington commit, will bolster the team’s defensive lineup significantly.

San Clemente Tritons

San Clemente approaches the new season with considerable experience, featuring six returning offensive starters and five on defense. Senior dual-threat player Jaxson Rex is poised to impact both the receiver and safety positions, while offensive lineman Scotty Johnson stands out as a consistent performer recognized as All-League second team last year.

Returning defensive end Josh Kerst, who led the team with 12 sacks in the previous season, is expected to enhance San Clemente’s defensive capabilities. The Tritons are currently evaluating two solid quarterback candidates, Luke Hardy and Eiler King, who both shone during the passing tournaments.

Upcoming Schedule

Practice for the teams begins on July 28 for week zero games, with week one practices starting August 4. Week zero games take place from August 21-23, followed by week one games from August 28-30. The CIF playoffs will launch the first round on November 7, with finals scheduled for November 28-29, leading up to the state championship bowl games on December 12-13.

Highlight Matches

The matchup between Mission Viejo and Santa Margarita on August 22 is already generating buzz, showcasing key players from both teams. Other notable games include Los Alamitos at Santa Margarita and a prominent non-league game featuring Bishop Gorman, also scheduled for September 27.

This comprehensive preview underscores the competitive landscape of the Alpha League, emphasizing the talent and expectations surrounding each team as they gear up for the 2025 high school football season in Orange County.
