Colorful trolley in Dana Point during summer with coastal scenery

News Summary

Dana Point has introduced a free Summer Trolley service beginning May 23, providing residents and visitors with easy access to local attractions and coastal areas. The service runs daily through Labor Day, improving connectivity with new stops and connecting to other trolley services in the region. Designed to be handicap-accessible, the trolleys make travel more convenient, reducing single-vehicle journeys and promoting eco-friendly transit options. With real-time updates available through a dedicated app, this initiative aims to enhance community engagement while encouraging usage to secure funding for future operations.

Dana Point has announced the launch of its free Summer Trolley service, which will commence on Friday, May 23, 2025, and will run daily through Labor Day, September 1, 2025. This initiative aims to provide residents and visitors with convenient access to local attractions and coastal areas, making it easier to enjoy the summer season.

The trolley service will operate on a diverse schedule: from Monday to Thursday, it will run between 12:00 PM and 9:00 PM; on Fridays, the hours will extend until 10:00 PM. Saturday service will start earlier, operating from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and Sunday hours will be from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. On major holidays such as Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day, the trolley will provide service from 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM, ensuring accessibility during peak travel times.

Each trolley is designed to be handicap-accessible, with vehicles scheduled to arrive approximately every 15 minutes. This enhances accessibility and convenience for all passengers, encouraging greater use of the service. The trolley acts as a regional hub, connecting Dana Point with South Orange County coastal cities, thereby promoting seamless travel along the coast.

The launch of this year’s service comes with the introduction of new trolley stops aimed at improving connectivity within the city. Notable new stops include:

  • Stop S17: Calle Naranja and Calle Juanita (Sunset Park)
  • Stop S18: Camino de Estrella and Calle Naranja
  • Stop S19: Camino de Estrella and Mira Costa (Connection point with San Clemente)
  • Stop S20: Camino Capistrano and Calle Loma (Pines Park)

Additionally, the Dana Point Trolley connects with various other local trolley services. For example, passengers can switch to the Laguna Beach Free Coastal Trolley at Salt Creek Beach/Ritz Carlton, or utilize the Laguna Niguel Summer Weekend Trolleys, which operate Thursday through Sunday. San Juan Capistrano also runs a free weekend summer trolley that operates on Saturdays and Sundays, directly connecting to the Dana Point service.

The newly operational trolleys not only serve local residents but are also strategically planned to accommodate tourists visiting coastal cities. San Clemente supports this initiative with its own daily summer trolley service, which connects with Dana Point’s service at Stop S23: Camino de Estrella and Mira Costa.

The continuation and sustainability of the Dana Point trolley program rely on maintaining ridership numbers to secure necessary grant funding for operational costs. As such, community support is crucial for the program’s viability and longevity. The city encourages residents and visitors alike to take advantage of this service to demonstrate the demand and necessity for such transportation options.

By introducing the free Summer Trolley service, Dana Point not only provides a practical transportation solution but also promotes eco-friendly transit options. Using public transportation helps to reduce single-vehicle journeys, thereby contributing positively to environmental sustainability efforts.

As the summer approaches, the Dana Point Trolley App will be available for download, offering real-time information for users regarding trolley schedules and routes. This initiative is part of a broader effort to facilitate community engagement and ensure efficient transit within and beyond Dana Point.

With the enhancements to the 2025 Summer Trolley program, residents and visitors are invited to enjoy the summer collaboratively while exploring the beautiful coastline and attractions of Dana Point and its neighboring cities.
