Washington, DC – Martin Richard Dunetz, a distinguished veteran and accomplished economist, passed away peacefully at his home on June 13, 2020, at the age of 95. His death marks the loss of a significant figure who contributed both to the military and to the field of economics throughout his lifetime.
Dunetz was born on October 28, 1924, in Brooklyn, NY, and later grew up in Belle Harbor, NY. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in Europe as a member of the 84th Infantry Division during World War II, participating in significant military operations, including the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in the Army’s 474th Anti-Aircraft Battalion and remained an active member of the Battle of the Bulge Association until his passing.
Following the war, Dunetz pursued higher education, completing a three-year architectural program at Pratt Institute. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics and history from Boston University and later earned a master’s degree from Harvard University. He further advanced his studies by securing a PhD in Financial Administration from the University of Sarasota.
Dunetz dedicated twenty years to his career as an economist in Florida, where he became the president of American Capital and Securities Corporation (AMCAP), located in Coral Gables. His expertise in finance was highlighted in his written works, including the book How to Finance Your Retirement, along with a second book titled You and Your Assets, published in 1997. His contributions to the academic and professional community included serving as president of the Harvard Club of Miami, being a member of the National Economists Club, and holding the status of a past fellow of the Financial Analysts Society.
In 1982, Dunetz relocated to Washington, DC, where he continued his involvement with the Harvard Club and remained active in various economic circles. His dedication to music was evident as he played the saxophone and clarinet, even forming his own dance band as a teenager. Throughout his life, he developed a profound appreciation for chamber music, opera, and jazz, and enjoyed retirement activities that included participating in a golf group at the Chevy Chase Club.
Dunetz is survived by his wife, Marta Miller Dunetz, with whom he shared nearly 26 years of marriage. He leaves behind two sons: Roger Dunetz, married to Ana Rodriguez, residing in Coral Gables, FL, and Jeremy Dunetz from Mission Viejo, CA. Additionally, he is survived by two stepchildren, Allison Ross Hanna, married to Matthew, who reside in Los Angeles along with their three daughters, and Dalton Ross, married to Christina Kelly, of Upper Montclair, NJ, along with their two children.
Martin Dunetz was predeceased by his brother, Arnold Dunetz, in 2008, and by his infant son, Jason Dunetz, in 1966. He was previously married to Mary Chichester. Interment is planned at Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date, allowing friends and family to honor his memory and contributions.
