News Summary

Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson has been charged with the murder of his wife, Sheryl, stemming from an alleged shooting at their home. The incident, reported as a potential murder-suicide, occurred during a heated argument while Ferguson was intoxicated. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is currently out on bond, with a pretrial hearing scheduled. The case has shocked the Anaheim Hills community, highlighting issues of domestic violence and alcohol abuse.

Anaheim Hills, California

Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson has been charged with the murder of his wife, Sheryl Ferguson, following an alleged shooting incident at their home on August 3, 2023. The incident, which occurred at their residence in the 8500 block of East Canyon Vista Drive, is being investigated as an alleged murder-suicide.

Police were dispatched to the scene around 6 p.m. after the couple’s adult son called 911, reporting the shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Sheryl Ferguson, age 65, with at least one gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm, a loaded .40-caliber pistol, was found, and investigators believe that Jeffrey Ferguson shot his wife in the chest during an argument while intoxicated.

Details of the Incident

According to the investigation, the couple had been arguing throughout the evening prior to the shooting. The confrontation escalated, and during this dispute, the firearm was retrieved from Ferguson’s ankle holster. It is reported that Ferguson later called emergency services but was evasive about the nature of the shooting, stating he had “lost it” and shot his wife in a text to his court clerk and bailiff.

Officers noted Ferguson appeared intoxicated upon their arrival, exhibiting slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol. A blood sample taken approximately seven hours after the shooting indicated a blood-alcohol level of 0.06. His son observed that his father’s behavior had become increasingly heated when drinking and arguing with Sheryl.

Ferguson’s Legal Status

On a later date, Jeffrey Ferguson pleaded not guilty to the murder charge at a court hearing in downtown Los Angeles. The decision to hear the case in Los Angeles is due to Ferguson’s connections within the Orange County judicial system. He is currently out on bond, with a pretrial hearing set for September 20.

Background

Judge Ferguson has a distinguished background, having worked in both law enforcement and the legal field. He served as a senior prosecutor before his appointment as a judge in 2015. He is originally from Oakland, California, and has made significant contributions to the legal community throughout his career.

Sheryl Ferguson was well-regarded within the community, active in various capacities, including roles within the probation departments and at American Funds Service Company. The couple had two adult sons, Kevin and Phillip, who have witnessed familial incidents involving Jeffrey Ferguson’s volatility while under the influence of alcohol. Previous instances documented included allegations of suicide attempts and accidental discharge of a firearm.

Community Impact

The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the Anaheim Hills community, as the couple was known to many residents. The circumstances surrounding the incident raise numerous questions regarding domestic disputes and the potential consequences of alcohol abuse within relationships.

As the case unfolds, it will be closely monitored by the community and legal professionals alike, highlighting the serious implications of domestic violence and substance abuse.
